Apple Motion
Video Tutorial …

I have been very busy lately giving that I am currently working on three jobs. Anyway I just wanted to give you something to play with, so here it is…

I was playing with circles and paint tool in Apple Motion to bring you this very interesting visual effect. I have used gradients to mask part of the circle and a behavior to move it around, This gave this animation the impression that the highlights are rotating around. I also used few different camera moves to give the animation movement.
And the best thing it is free. I have zipped the file which you can download and butcher as much as you want. Please bear in mind it is a bit heavy on rendering. To download the file please use this link.
Please see my video tutorial below were I am showing you a workflow of how I created this animation. Please note this is not step by step tutorial but a workflow which covers all techniques involved to make this type of animation.
If you decide to download the file to play whit it, please take a second and say thanks in the comments section people.

I have no idea why nobody has commented as yet, but this is a fantastic tutorial. I am new to Motion and I’m hungry to learn. I saw this link over at the Apple Motion blog, and I am awed by what you’re doing. While I mightn’t have immediate use for this particular effect, the techniques are real eye-openers. Keep up the grrrreeeat work, man! You are an inspiration to novices like myself!
Hi Back,
Thanks for you comments. I also have no idea why people are not commenting, it is quite sad and disheartening actually. Seems my work is not appreciated after all. Most of it free and I put my weekend mornings and any other time I have free to do this rather than resting , yet I do not even get a simple thank you, a nice try man, or this was crap man, maybe you could do this next time. People should learn to be more appreciative of what they get on embryo.
I agree about the comments. Your tutorials are definitely appreciated! Don’t think otherwise. I can’t thank you enough for spending all your time (and i know it is a lot) to creating these FREE videos. I have used your techniques in countless projects and they wow whoever i show them too. Truly amazing work that you do. Keep up the amazing work Zak.
What I do not understand is that people do not realize that this is a platform not only for my work but a platform where they can learn Apple Motion and few other things for free. Furthermore it is a platform where they can ask questions and promote dialog for motion users. Think of it as a pool of useful knowledge that is always there if you need it. I think this 1990 feel of I am there but will stay unknown should be left in the 1990. People this is almost 2010, things are different these days.
By the way thanks for your comments, and I am hoping you will continue to learn from embryo.
Hi Zac,
One thing I really liked that you did when presenting this tutorial is that you first put the animation up and the motion project file to download before you posted the tutorial. I was able to pretty much reproduce the whole thing (thanks to what I learned from your previous videos!) except the animated glow around the rings. The solution was very cool: duplicating the ring, changing opacity over the stroke, and applying a blend mode – then rotating with a parameter behavior. That’s not a trick you learn in a manual. Thanks!!!!!
I am glad that you have managed to almost duplicate the tutorial by just seeing what I have done in the motion document. I will try to do this more often, this will enable people to breakdown tutorial and see how I do things. Well, this is why embryo is here, to go beyond conventional and a boring manual.
Back to the commenting: I just discovered your site, and I am returning regularly to see just how far Motion can be pushed and to see if I can ask and contribute. Thanks, Zak. Don’t feel under-appreciated. Sometimes it takes a while to build up a following/momentum.
Thanks and I am always open for people contributing, just let me know how can you contribute to the site.
I totally agree with Dwaynne. I’m living proof of how valuable this site is for learning Motion – and other little tricks. Besides being very informative on mechanics, the tutorials have a high artistic value that inspires one to be creative. I have a feeling that 2010 will be a great year for embryo!
I think when I started this project almost fey years ago I wanted to make embryo challenging. I wanted to see if I could inspire people to use a little bit more that a obvious generator or a particle button. I wanted embryo to be a hub where people can learn one from another. Hopeful this is where we can start to build a nice community of creatives who will challenge and push forward.
Hi Zac,
I have to admit this is amazing am fairly new to motion and the techniques your applying are very helpful. I will definitely come back for more. Embryo is great!!!!!!!!
Thanks very much and please free to contribute via discussions, ideas, examples of your and other animations. Or anything within our lovely creative world.
Hi Zac,
Another rookie here with motion 3. I want to thank you for your time and work that went into making these tutorials! I’ll be sure to hit up your site when I’m stuck on something and I’ll definitely pass along this site to fellow enthusiasts. Fantastic job my friend.
This is why Embryo is here. The community is growing day by day. Motion is getting stronger all the time. Thanks very much…
Hi Zak,
I’ve only recently found Embryo, but I love it! The stuff you do with Motion is just fantastic, and I especially enjoy all the “organic” stuff like your Light Refraction tutorial. Lots of people in the motion graphics world still don’t understand how powerful Motion really is, they think it’s a toy compared to AfterEffects, but that’s because they haven’t seen your website :)
Keep up the great work, really looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!
Thanks for your kind comments. Looks like I need to work on Google spider. I am obviously not getting the best rating.
zak,
Another newbie to Motion.. Enjoyed your tutorial. Kept up with the instructions, but could not find the reflection option on the plane. Figured it is because I am using Motion 3 and that must be an addition to Motion 4.
Thanks again for the helpful tutorials.
Kirk
Yeas you are correct it is a ner feature of motion 4. Anyway enjoy your new Motion creative experience.
Thanks alot man this was really helpful :) looking forward to watching the rest of your videos:)
Not a problem. Just keep on learning.
There is plenty to learn on my website.

Thanks Very much. Cinema $d is something we all need. It is amazing program.
Beautiful effect, Zak. I’m looking foward to seeing how I can adapt this technique to other shapes. Thanks for sharing this great idea with the rest of us.
It is a pleasure. Do let me know what have you done with it please.
wow!! What an Artist! thank you for sharing all these M4 effects.
Thank you. Look like you are new to embryo. Welcome I hope you will learn few new tricks.
Zak,
I’m using Motion version 3.02. I don’t have a reflection check box in properties when I select the “plane” group with the square in it for this tutorial. Does Motion v. 3.02 not have that? Is there something I need to do to enable it?
HI there,
For this effect you need Apple Motion 4. Reflections where not available in Motion 3. you can do everything else in Motion 3 but for reflections you need Motion 4. Mark Spencer have made a tutorial on how to create reflections on his website, this might help you achieve what I have produced. See this tutorial: http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-create-reflection-effect-apple-motion-150286/
